Washing Your Braids

How Often

Wash your braids every 1-2 weeks, or as needed if you exercise frequently.

Washing Steps

  1.  Dilute sulfate-free shampoo with water in an applicator bottle

  2.  Apply to scalp between braids, gently massaging

  3.  Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water

  4.  Apply diluted conditioner if desired (optional)

  5.  Rinse completely - no residue should remain

Drying

• Pat gently with a microfiber towel

• Air dry when possible

• Use a hooded dryer on low/cool setting if needed

• Never sleep on wet braids

Nighttime Protection

Essential Protection

Protecting your braids while you sleep is crucial for longevity:

• Wear a satin or silk bonnet or scarf

• Sleep on a satin pillowcase as backup protection

• Tuck longer braids inside bonnet to prevent tangling

• Re-tie if your bonnet comes off during the night

Why It Matters

Cotton pillowcases create friction that causes frizz, unraveling, and premature wear. Satin and silk allow your braids to glide smoothly, maintaining their fresh appearance.

Things to Avoid

  •  Heavy products: Avoid thick gels, waxes, or creams that cause buildup

  •  Excessive manipulation: Don't constantly re-style or pull on braids

  •  Chlorine & salt water: Protect with a swim cap or avoid submerging

  •  Heat styling: Most synthetic hair cannot withstand heat

  •  Tight ponytails: Can cause tension and breakage at edges

  •  Keeping styles too long: Remove braids after 6-8 weeks maximum

How Long Do Braids Last?

With proper care, braided styles typically last:

  •  Box braids: 6-8 weeks

  •  Knotless braids: 4-6 weeks

  •  Twists: 4-6 weeks

  •  Cornrows: 2-4 weeks

  •  Faux locs: 6-8 weeks

Always listen to your hair and scalp. If you experience excessive itching, tension, or discomfort, it's time to remove your braids regardless of how long it's been.
